May 2022: Facebook Group Description (as of May 28 2022): "I am so excited to share Contact Improvisation with Winnipeg! I (Rachelanne Arava) or the occasional guest teacher indeed welcome - will be sharing a 1 hour class with you every Sunday morning to warm you up for the jam and explore some skills to augment your dance. Then the second hour we JAM! We're meeting at 70 Albert Street, Studio 320 from 11-1:30. Cost is $10. Parking is free on the street and it's a good location to get to by bus or bike! Our vision is to grow a large CI Winnipeg community - dancers and musicians. I'd like to have another class on a weekday evening and class for children. I'd like a yearly Winnipeg Contact Improv Festival one day with a master teacher. I started CI at the School of Contemporary Dancer's Professional Program in Winnipeg in 2002 with Peter Bingham coming as a guest teacher from Vancouver yearly. It was so different than the technique I had ever been exposed to my whole life. There were no pointed feet! Rolling around and exploring a point of contact with the Earth, sharing contact with others, weight on hands, weight on bodies - was all new and challenging for me, and a little intimidating - but also comfortable, intuitive, home. Over the years I continued to explore CI with Peter Bingham's summer intensive, as a weekly jam devotee for a year in Montreal after I graduated the Professional Program in Winnipeg - and their International Festival - then at the yearly International CI festival in Israel for 3 years. I was also blessed to practice with a great teacher - Danya Elraz in Jerusalem on a weekly basis for a few years. We will focus on developing the "small dance" - the reflexes below the level of consciousness which keep the body standing, a rolling point of contact, sliding, falling, weight exchange, off balance, alignment, continuity of motion and momentum... Contact Improvisation is a conversation between two people based on listening - leading and following simultaneously - the mystery that is the dance." Nicole Mapu and I (Rachelanne Arava) will be sharing 30 minute warmups and skill explorations with you every second Sunday morning, moving into a jam, from 10-12, at 85 Westgate. My vision is to get so much interest that we need a bigger space and we move to a big studio space to have as many drop in jammers as possible for a $5-$10 fee on these biweekly Sunday mornings.
