Each advanced class is limited to 15 participants Axis Syllabus - the ascending spine Instructor: Kira Kirsch The discourse of this series begins with the multi- dimensional and undulating spine. We will work towards the cultivation of a subtle articulate and deep sensing spine; a spine which virtuously distributes and recycles kinetic impact through itself, into pelvis, periphery and space. Continuous flow and sophisticated phrases will highlight the effect, function and healthy use of the dynamic spine. As a contemporary dancer, Ruth has studied and performed many different movement disciplines in various countries, which has given her an deep appreciation for dance culture from around the world. She created and performed dance pieces with Ardent Body Communications Dance Collective (Marseille), L'Inattendue Compagnie (Bruxelles), R. Murray Schafer and Kyoryukan (Japan). ...Ruth's own choreographic projects have been presented in various venues. Credits include: Aichi Bunka Kaikan & Kyoto Arts Center (Japan), 2001 Canada Summer Games, (London, ON) The Canada House (London UK), Meeting Point (Bruxelles), Aeolin Hall, (London, ON). Ruth has been teaching performing arts in schools and companies for over 10 years across Ontario, UK, Belgium, France, and Japan. Since the early '90s she has spent a considerable amount of time in the Madawaska Valley where she has many close friends and family. Kira Kirsch, performer, teacher and young choreographer from Berlin/Vienna, studied at the Conservatory Vienna, Tanzpool, Nomadic College and with influencing individuals such as Frey Faust, Ivan Wolve, Meg Stuart, Nita Little among many others. Across Europe Kira has danced with ArdentBodiesDanceCollective (Int.), Half Machine(DK), Cie.Escapade and Cie. Anna Tenta(A). In San Francisco Kira works with David Slaza, Sara Shelton Mann, Avy k. productions and Dancebrigade. Her recent collaboration with Kelly Keenan(Montreal) has been shown at festivals in the US, Canada and Austria. She is a master teacher of the movement theory, analysis and method called the Axis Syllabus and teaches internationally. Kira produces her own work and events under the umbrella of corpi liquidi. www.corpiliquidi.com . . . Kevin O'Connor grew up in London Ontario where he was immersed in music, dance and visual arts from a young age. After completing a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Conservation he devoted his time to both circus and dance training. He moved to Europe to train with the master teacher Frey Faust to learn the axis syllabus (AS) technique (studying the AS for the past 7 years). He trained for two years at the national centre for circus arts in London England. He then moved to Montreal, where he competed a Diploma in Circus Arts from the National Circus School of Montreal. He specialized in corde lisse and minored in clown. Kevin has worked for Bessie award winning dance choreographer Noemie Lafrance and director Lech Majewski in New York City, Ana Flecha and Nita Little (California), and has collaborated on numerous pieces with Ruth Douthwright (Canada). Kevin received grants from the Ontario and Canadian arts councils to create an evening length piece called "The Sunlight Zone" in 2009. Kevin will start a Masters of Fine Art in choreography at the University of California Davis this fall. Ana Flecha recently presented her solo The Red Queen in Estonia as part of the symposium Imagining Bodies, at the University of Tallinn, where she also taught workshops based in the Axis Syllabus and contact improvisation. She has been presenting work for over a decade, recently receiving support from Dancer's Group and Theatre Bay Area, and the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. In 2008 she was the Artist in Residence at The 418 Project where she created the evening length work My American Dream, and in 2009 performed in Kevin O'Connor's The Sunlight Zone in California and Canada. She recently co-produced the month long dance training event the Nomadic College in Northeastern Brazil hosting over forty people from all over the world. Ana has performed with Cid Pearlman Performance Projects, Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern, Moving & Storage/Crash, Burn & Die, Mir & a Company, Frey Faust, Nita Little, Sharon Took Zozaya, Kerstin Stuart and Sarah Wilbourne. www.undercurve.com Krista Gansterer loves pursuing physical activity that challenges her body and mind and provides a refreshing outlook on life. With a history in martial arts, dance, rugby and recently yoga and pilates she continue to explore disciplines that keep her strong and healthy. Krista holds a diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion from St Lawrence College in Kingston ON and has completed her Personal Trainer Certificate and Group Fitness Certification. She is currently working as a Personal Trainer and Pilates instructor in Kingston ON. Blair Voyvodic is a dancing doctor with a fascination for flying and freedom of movement. He has evolved this "flying contraption" as a playful exploration of how our bodies move and can be freed from the ground.
