We never get BEYOND the fundamentals. We can only aspire to master them.
- Mark Koenig
For people who are completely new or fairly new to contact improv, the Ontario Regional Contact Jam is offering a Very Basics Introduction to Contact Improvisation Saturday, May 14 from 11am to 12:30pm, 2nd floor, 805 Dovercourt Road (just north of Bloor).
The aim is to provide a fun, safe intro to some principles and practices for people to then begin dancing at the Jam that very weekend (and elsewhere).
The class is included as part of the Ontario Regional Contact Jam weekend admission. Guests not subscribed to the full weekend pay $10 for the class and may stay for any part of the jam at $5/hour. Come play with us!
Come with loose-fitting or yoga clothes and prepared to dance in bare feet. For more information about the intro class, contact the facilitator Henry Wai at wai_renooy@sympatico.ca or 416-913-8861.
This 1.5 hour class will be an invitation to tune in and out gradually. A time to welcome body sensations, a time to acknowledge our physical relation to time, space and forces. A time to heat up the joints, cool down the mind, and gather our concentration and curiosity. A time to witness our excitement, judgements or disillusions as brain scenarios. A time to dive into body reality and prepare for a full day of movement and practice.
Catherine Lessard transmits with passion and coherence the key principles of dance improvisation and contact improvisation, since 2001. She has studied and performed with dancers of international reputation such as Nancy Stark Smith, Daniel Lepkoff, David Zambrano, Andrew Harwood, Kirstie Simpson and Ray Chung. She also has experience in Body-Mind-Centering, Authentic Movement, and butoh, and has professional training in music and communications. Combining, in a unified pedagogy, both a sharp artistic vision and a hungry curiosity for science, Catherine teaches and performs improvisation regularly in Canada, in USA and in Europe. Noticed performer in Now (2005), Une peu de vie... (2008), Seed/Semence (2009), Face-Back-Profile and Histoires Vivantes d'Outremer (2010), Catherine has also served as president of the Montreal Association for Contact Improvisation (ACI) from 2007 to 2009.
We're planning the next Ontario Regional Contact Jam May 13-15 2011. We invite all members of the Ontario contact community to join the planning group, already in progress. We'll be meeting next just after a Toronto jam:
Sunday, 2010 December 19 at 14h00 (2pm),
at 350 Rusholme Road, near Dovercourt, in Toronto.
We regularly accommodate out-of-town teleconferencers, so please let Charlie (OntJam2011@contactimprov.ca) know if you would like to call in.
We want to plan our way forward in an open way with broad involvement from the Ontario CI community. So join us and help guide our common future.
If you'd like to participate, but can't come to meetings, call one of us, and we'll get you hooked in with the group:
Thanks,
Charlie, Michael, Ian, Tom, Miro, Carlynn, Tanya, Twyla ...
We're having a talent show and possibly other performances. We're planning for most of the performances slots to be available for short (5 minute) spur-of-the-moment ideas right at the jam itself, but if you have a prepared piece you hope to fit in, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate. We're organizing the 2011 Ontario Regional Contact Jam, May 13 - 15, 2011, in Toronto.
We invite all interested and committed contactors to join in the creation of another awesome contact dance experience.
We're looking for help with all kinds of sub-projects: flyer design, advertising and promotion, specialty workshops, food preparation, billeting, set-up and clean-up, facilitation, talent show, music, budgeting, incorporation, and all kinds of stuff we haven't thought of and you have.
We'd like to invite members of the contact improv community throughout Ontario and neighbourhood to help us pull it all together. If you've got an idea of how you can contribute, please let us know. Contact one of us, and we'll get you hooked in with the group:
In the five days immediately preceding the Ontario Regional Contact Improv Jam, you could attend Daniel Lepkoff's Making and Seeing Dance workshop in Toronto, May 9th to 13th, 2011. (This is a separate event with a separate admission fee.) This movement event takes place in the same building. Come visit Toronto and do both events, one after the other!
